Eskom has recorded a profit after tax of R16 billion for the 2025 financial year, its first profitability return since 2017.

The results were announced by the prower utlity’s CEO Dam Marokane at a media briefing in Johannesburg.

The results are in contrast with the R25,5 billion loss in 2024, underpinned by government’s debt relief framework, and a reduction in primary energy costs.

Marokane says Eskom has moved into an area of better performance, in the past two years.

“In the midst of all of this we are able to come out with a R16 billion profit after tax compared to the previous year of R55 billion losses. This performance is driven by significant savings in primary energy costs and callable expanding that by the increase of somev53% in our sales because of our generation sales.

And also, the fact that generation primary mix is much more favourable than generating power from expensive diesel machine. There is also a tariff increase that kicked in, in that space,” says Marokane.
