Newly elected Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Geordin Hill-Lewis says his top national policy priority is restoring law and order across South Africa.
The 39-year-old Cape Town mayor secured an overwhelming victory at the party’s elective congress in Midrand, winning more than 90% of the vote. He defeated the DA’s caucus leader in the Sedibeng Municipality, Sibusiso Dyonase, in a decisive contest that signals strong internal support for his leadership.
In his acceptance address, Hill-Lewis emphasised that rebuilding law and order would form the cornerstone of the party’s national agenda. He argued that without a stable and secure environment, South Africa cannot unlock economic growth or improve the lives of its citizens.
“When law and order break down, no economy can grow, no community can flourish, and no democracy can thrive,” he said.
Hill-Lewis added that tackling crime, strengthening policing, and ensuring accountability within the criminal justice system would be key focus areas. He also highlighted the importance of collaboration between national, provincial and local governments to restore public trust and create safer communities.
