Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mmamoloko Kubayi, has announced that the government will provide an additional 10 buses to assist with the repatriation of Malawian nationals from Durban.
Kubayi said that since government officials visited the Sherwood area, west of Durban’s CBD, the number of Malawian nationals awaiting repatriation has risen significantly and now stands at approximately 7,000 people.
The announcement was made during a media briefing by the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration, which provided an update on measures being implemented following an address by Cyril Ramaphosa on migration-related matters. The committee outlined ongoing efforts to manage migration challenges while ensuring that processes are conducted in an orderly and humane manner.
Kubayi said government departments are working closely with Malawian authorities to facilitate a smooth and coordinated repatriation process. She added that logistical arrangements are being strengthened to accommodate the growing number of people seeking assistance to return home.
