The IEC’s Chief Electoral Officer, Sy Mamabolo, says vote counting is taking longer in the eThekwini Municipality because of the municipality’s size.
He says this is due to the length of the ballot papers, which contain several sections that need to be counted.
Speaking during a media briefing, Mamabolo said this has resulted in the vote-counting process moving slower than in other areas.
However, he says no major challenges have been reported in the vote-counting process so far.

Mamabolo also added that the commission has introduced an automated system to monitor election results and identify possible irregularities.
He says the system is designed to detect unusual voting patterns such as very high voter turnout.
It can also flag cases where the number of votes for the same political party does not match at a voting station.
Mamabolo says the system is part of the IEC’s efforts to improve transparency and protect the integrity of the electoral process.
