Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) president Velenkosini Hlabisa has raised the alarm over the ongoing wave of political killings, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal, and has called for an independent investigation into the matter.
Speaking at a media briefing, Hlabisa said the continued murders of political office bearers remain unresolved and deeply concerning. He stressed that a police-led probe is no longer appropriate, given serious allegations that have emerged involving the police themselves.
His remarks come in the wake of troubling statements by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who alleged political interference and dysfunction within policing structures.
“These are no longer just matters of criminal investigation; they are deeply political and threaten the credibility of our institutions,” Hlabisa said.
He emphasised that restoring public confidence in law enforcement must be a top priority. The IFP leader also backed President Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision to place Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on special leave, calling it a necessary step toward accountability and reform.
