The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), through a motion in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, has commended the renewal of the contract of provincial Police Commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
The party says this step supports the retention of experienced and capable leadership within the South African Police Service (SAPS), and will contribute to enhancing public safety in the province, which continues to face high levels of violent crime.
IFP Chief Whip in the Legislature, Blessed Gwala, says the party believes that Premier Thami Ntuli deserves recognition for his strong advocacy on the matter. Gwala adds that the renewal is likely to yield a positive outcome for policing stability in KwaZulu-Natal.
He says the IFP notes that the process to finalise the renewal is currently underway and has urged the relevant decision-makers at the national level, including the Ministry of Police, to give it careful and objective consideration.
Mkhwanazi has been widely credited with strengthening crime-fighting operations in the province, particularly in tackling organised crime, political killings and extortion-related violence. His leadership has also been associated with improved coordination between specialised SAPS units and local law enforcement agencies.
KwaZulu-Natal remains one of South Africa’s crime hotspots, with ongoing concerns around murder rates, taxi-related violence and extortion syndicates targeting businesses. Political parties and civil society organisations have increasingly called for consistent leadership within SAPS to address these challenges effectively.
