The chairperson of Parliament’s independent impeachment committee, Makashule Gana, says the committee supports the decision to oppose President Cyril Ramaphosa’s court application seeking to halt its inquiry into the Phala Phala matter.
Gana said the committee believes it has a strong legal basis to continue with its work and is confident that the courts will allow the process to proceed.
He confirmed that, in his capacity as chairperson, he will act on behalf of the committee as the second respondent in the matter. He also intends to petition National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza to join the opposition to Ramaphosa’s application.
According to Gana, the committee remains committed to fulfilling its constitutional mandate independently and without fear, favour or prejudice.
The court application forms part of an ongoing legal and political battle over the committee’s investigation into the Phala Phala matter, which has attracted significant public interest and scrutiny. The committee is tasked with determining whether there are sufficient grounds to warrant further parliamentary action relating to the allegations.
Gana said the committee would continue preparing for its work while awaiting the outcome of the legal proceedings.
