Minister of Health Aaron Motsoaledi says the findings of an investigation into the death of medical intern Alulutho Mazwi are expected to be released within the coming weeks.
Mazwi was working in the paediatrics department at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital in Umlazi, KwaZulu-Natal, when he died in May last year while on duty.
The 25-year-old doctor, who lived with diabetes, allegedly became ill while at work but was reportedly instructed by his supervisor to continue working despite his condition. His death sparked widespread concern within the medical community and renewed scrutiny of working conditions faced by junior doctors in the public health sector.
The investigation is being led by Health Ombud Taole Mokoena and extends beyond Mazwi’s death to include other unexplained deaths of junior doctors in KwaZulu-Natal.
Speaking on the matter, Motsoaledi said the department is treating the investigation with the seriousness it deserves and is awaiting the final report from the Health Ombud.
He said those found to have acted negligently or inappropriately would be held accountable and face the necessary disciplinary or legal consequences.
The minister added that the findings are expected to provide clarity on the circumstances surrounding the deaths and assist in strengthening measures to protect healthcare workers, particularly junior doctors and medical interns working in public hospitals.
The investigation has drawn significant attention from healthcare professionals, labour organisations and advocacy groups, who have called for improved working conditions, adequate supervision and greater support for young doctors in the country’s healthcare system.
