ActionSA has expressed concern at the reappointment of Kenny Kunene as Johannesburg’s mayoral committee member for Transport.

Kunene was suspended from the Patriotic Alliance’s activities and resigned as a councillor and Mayco member, after he was seen at the Sandton home of murder accused Katiso “KT” Molefe when the Hawks swooped to arrest the controversial businessman.

He was reinstated after PA leader Gayton McKenzie threatened to exit the Government of National Unity as well as the Government of Provincial unity in Gauteng, if Kunene was not re-appointed, arguing that a probe by an independent law firm had cleared him of wrongdoing.

ActionSA’s Joyce Ntombela says Johannesburg deserves competent leaders chosen for their ability to deliver services not as bargaining chips in unstable coalitions.

“This is not governance, it is political battering at the expense of millions of commuters, who rely on buses, taxes and safe road every day,” says Ntombela.
