The Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration says its meeting with the organisers of protests targeting Home Affairs offices was cordial and frank, with very critical issues raised.

Violent protests erupted in Durban and Johannesburg earlier this month, following widespread misinformation about a Home Affairs directive on how asylum seekers should be processed.

In July, the Constitutional Court declared certain provisions of the Refugees Act unconstitutional and invalid.

Committee chairperson Mmamoloko Kubayi says the committee has reaffirmed that they are not opposed to legal migration.

“The delegation expressed its support for a the governments efforts to build a safe, secure, prosperous and united country to address illegal immigration decisively,” said Kubayi.

She continued,”We welcome the community leaders commitment to nation building and to finding solutions to illegal immigration in the country.”

The minister also stressed the need for the proper registration of non-governmental organisations operating in the country.

Kubayi maintained that unregistered NGO are prone to engaging in illegal activities, some of which includes attacking the state and not operating in the interest of the country.
