The motion, tabled by the Umkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP), called for Ntuli’s removal from office, citing dissatisfaction with his leadership of the province.
Proceedings descended into chaos after Speaker of the Legislature, Nontembeko Boyce, declined the MKP’s request for the vote to be conducted by secret ballot. MKP members objected to the ruling, disrupting the sitting.
As tensions escalated, members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) were called into the chamber to restore order. A scuffle ensued between police officers and MKP members, prompting the temporary suspension of proceedings.
Despite the disruption, the vote went ahead, and the motion of no confidence was defeated. Speaker Boyce later confirmed that Thami Ntuli remains the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal.
The incident adds to growing political tensions in the provincial legislature, particularly following recent shifts in party representation after the national and provincial elections.
