The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education has urged residents of Chatsworth, south of Durban, to remain calm and avoid fuelling tensions following a stabbing incident at Glenover Secondary School.
The department confirmed that the violence stemmed from a clash on the school’s soccer field, which later escalated and drew in parents and former learners. The situation eventually required the intervention of both police and private security.
Five learners were stabbed during the racially charged confrontation. Four pupils have since been suspended, pending disciplinary processes.
Education MEC Sipho Hlomuka condemned the violence, appealing for tolerance, peace, and greater parental responsibility. He also stressed that the department will support law enforcement and school leadership in efforts to restore safety and normality at the school.
Police have opened a case, and investigations are under way. Additional security measures are expected to be implemented to prevent further unrest.
