Basic Education minister Siviwe Gwarube says that the financial difficulties faced by the KwaZulu-Natal Education Department are not unique to the province.
The provincial government has revealed that it’s Education Department is in a dire financial situation and urgently needs about R3.4 billion.
The department is the biggest in the country with over two million learners.
Gwarube says that going forward the province will pursue a multi-year financial recovery plan.
“The conditional grant for infrastructure is going to capture projects in the province, where conditional grants for things like school nutrition is also allocated to where it’s meant to be. It becomes a concern when provinces start to utilize conditional grants for things that are not meant to be used for,” says Gwarube.
