KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has further endeared himself to the public by donating nearly R44,000 to the SAPS Education Trust Fund, which supports the children of fallen police officers.
The funds were raised through a BackaBuddy campaign initiated by social media influencers Chris Excel and Ori. The campaign aimed to buy two cows as a token of appreciation for Mkhwanazi following his widely praised anti-corruption media briefing on 6 July.
Instead of accepting the gift, Mkhwanazi redirected the money to a cause he believes will have a more meaningful and lasting impact, supporting the families of police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.
More than 430 individuals contributed to the campaign. Many donors described Mkhwanazi’s stance against corruption as courageous and inspiring.
He said the gesture was not about him but about honouring the legacy of police officers who made the ultimate sacrifice.
