The KwaZulu-Natal Police have welcomed the sentencing of 33-year-old Umzimkhulu serial rapist, Tenes Hassan.

KwaZulu-Natal police say they are committed to working hard to fight the scourge of violence and killings of women and children in the province.

Police made the remarks following the sentencing of the serial rapist to six life terms in prison.

The rapist, Hassan, was convicted of raping six women between January and December 2022 in Umzimkhulu, in southern KwaZulu-Natal.

It is reported that the 33-year-old Hassan attacked all six women at their homes before robbing them of their cellphones and money.

KZN police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda says they welcome the sentencing and confirmed the additional charges laid on the perpetrator.

“The Kokstad family violence child protection unit detectives collected pieces of evidence and linked Hassan to old rape cases through the DNA,” said the KZN SAPS spokesperson.

He added,”The court further sentenced Hassan to a an additional eight years in prison for house breaking, and his name will be entered in the national register of sexual offenders.”

Amidst the country’s ongoing gender based violence crisis, Hassan’s judgement has provided a glimpse of progress on the prosecution of sexual offenders in the KZN province.
