Deputy president Paul Mashatile has called on South Africans to honour the legacy of struggle stalwart Oliver Tambo through active citizenship, responsible voting and community service.

Speaking at a wreath-laying ceremony at Tamboville Cemetery in Gauteng, Mashatile said building a better South Africa was a shared responsibility between government and citizens.

He has urged the public to fight corruption, strengthen democracy and participate peacefully in elections.

“Although OR Tampo lives here, his legacy lives on in the constitutional democracy we enjoy. In the freedoms we exercise and in the values of non-racialism and in the quality, unity and justice that continue to shape our nation,” he said.

Mashatile says South Africa’s struggle for equality remains unfinished, with poverty, unemployment and inequality continuing to affect millions of people.

He also has called on the government and citizens to work together to address these challenges and build a united, non-racial, non-sexist and prosperous society in line with Tambo’s vision.
