National police commissioner Fannie Masemola has told the Madlanga commission that the disbandment of the political killings task team was both unlawful and abrupt.
Masemola says that Police Minister Senzo Mchunu never raised concerns about the unit beforehand and did not consult key stakeholders, including the national prosecuting authority.
He has added that he was on leave when Mchunu issued the directive, and learned of the decision via a WhatsApp message, with no prior discussion or warning.
“General Mkhwanazi informed me that he too did not engage in the possible dissolution of the PKTT. Given the fact that the minister was instructing not soliciting our values on the disbandment of the PKTT, I think it is necessary to speak to the president about the issue,” says Masemola.
