National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola is expected to testify before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria today.

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi was the commission’s first witness last week.

He delved into, among other issues, the alleged infiltration of law enforcement agencies by an organised crime syndicate, reportedly with the assistance of key figures in business, Parliament, and the executive.

Masemola is expected to respond to Mkhwanazi’s claims, including allegations of undue influence to disband the KwaZulu-Natal Police’s political killings task team.

Meanwhile, Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development Mammoloko Kubayi says the work being done by the commission is crucial in the fight against corruption.

“If you are called upon to assist that commission, you have an obligation as a South African to help the men and women who work within this justice cluster. It’s actually a threat to access to justice — a threat to our democracy. That’s why we must protect them—all of us, as South Africans,” said Kubayi.
