The KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi says that the establishment of the Political Killings Task Team was not politically motivated but an executive decision to address rising political murders in KZN.
Testifying before Parliament’s ad hoc committee investigating allegations of political interference in policing Mkhwanazi says the team was formed following president Cyril Ramaphosa’s 2018 directive and operated under a national mandate.
He has dismissed claims that the task team’s creation or disbandment was influenced by political agendas.
“The task team that was employed to work and execute police work that had to be approved by the National Commissioner, so it was accountable to the National Commissioner and not to the IMC. The successes that the team was producing that then the National Commissioner had to account to the IMC the work that was done,” says Mkhwanazi.
