South Africa’s ambassador to France Nathi Mthethwa has died in Paris, with the French government saying the former minister was last seen at the weekend.

According to media reports in Paris, the former police minister is alleged to have jumped from the 22nd floor of a 4-star hotel in the city.

Mthethwa’s body was found today.

The Department of International Relations has confirmed receipt of the tragic death, saying it will issue a statement in due course.

The news come just days after the former police minister was implicated at the Madlanga Commission for alleged political interference by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

In his testimony Mkhwanazi stated that Mthethwa had attempted to influence the Inspector General of Intelligence, Faith Radebe, to drop the charges against Richard Mdluli, who is a former head of police crime intelligence. Mthethwa  was appointed as ambassador to France last year.
