Parliament’s ad hoc committee will today hear testimony from a new witness, National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola.

The committee is investigating allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who concluded his testimony yesterday.

Appearing before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, Masemola accused suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu of violating section 207 of the Constitution by ordering the disbandment of the KwaZulu-Natal political killings task team.

He also accused former Police Minister Bheki Cele of protecting suspects and interfering with case dockets.

Testifying before the ad hoc committee, Mkhwanazi had this to say about the disbanded task team:

“The task team was a team that was employed to work and execute police work that had to be approved by the national commissioner.

“So it was accountable to the national commissioner, not the ANC. The success was that the team was producing results—that the national commissioner had to account to the ANC for the work that was done,” said Mkhwanazi.
