President Cyril Ramaphosa has committed to acting on the recommendations of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
The commission which is tasked with investigating allegations of criminality political interference and corruption in the criminal justice system got underway on Wednesday.
The KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s testimony has emerged as a cornerstone of the investigation.
His allegations detail extensive networks of corruption involving senior officials including suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu across multiple branches of government.
Mkhwanazi also alleged that Mchunu disbanded a political killings task team in the province in a WhatsApp message and without receiving a formal briefing on its work.
Interim reports from the commission are expected after three and six months.
Ramaphosa told the national broadcaster that some of the things that are already coming out of the commission are startling and worrying.
‘In many ways the Madlanga Commission process is going to be quite transformative, it is going to lead to a number of changes so that the rule of law is properly consolidated in our country,” says Ramaphosa.
