President Cyril Ramaphosa says government is exploring measures to ease the impact of rising fuel prices on consumers.
He was speaking on the sidelines of the Bana Pele leadership summit in Sandton, Gauteng.
Ramaphosa has however warned that any relief must be weighed against the impact on public finances and national reserves.
He says price cuts would require careful budget decisions, adding that government cannot make an immediate decision.
“We are not the only country that is affected by rising fuel prices and we are giving serious consideration on what needs to be done.” said Ramaphosa.
He continued,”When the fuel price rose a few months ago, government poured about 24 billion rand, now that it’s gone up again, everybody is giving consideration about what they should do, and so are we.”
Fuel prices have increased a record six times in the year 2026, resulting in further suffocation of South Africa’s struggling economy.
The biggest increase was in April, as petrol went up by R3.06 per litre, followed by the most recent increase when prices hiked R3.33 in September.
