President Cyril Ramaphosa has described the late Deputy President David Mabuza as a man who was deeply committed to the well-being of South African citizens.
Speaking during the official state visit of Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, Ramaphosa said it was fitting to honour Mabuza’s legacy on such an occasion, given the former deputy president’s efforts in strengthening international relations.
“It is important to pay tribute to him today, because he built bonds beyond the borders of South Africa. He was a leader who cared for his people and believed in unity, both at home and on the global stage,” said Ramaphosa.
David Mabuza passed away yesterday in hospital following a short illness. He was 64 years old.
Known as “The Cat” for his political resilience, Mabuza served as the Deputy President of South Africa from 2018 to 2023. He was also the former Premier of Mpumalanga and a senior leader within the African National Congress (ANC). His tenure was marked by efforts to address land reform, service delivery, and intergovernmental relations, as well as acting as a key envoy on issues related to conflict resolution.
Details of his memorial service and funeral are expected to be announced in the coming days. The Presidency has yet to confirm whether a state funeral will be held.
