Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Olivier Nduhungirehe, says discussions on migration should focus on addressing its underlying causes rather than assigning blame to any single country.
His remarks come amid recent violent anti-immigration protests in parts of South Africa, where tensions over undocumented migrants have escalated in several communities.
Nduhungirehe was speaking after meeting with South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, in Pretoria on Wednesday.
He said migration is a complex issue affecting many countries across the continent and should be addressed through collective African solutions.
Nduhungirehe emphasised the importance of understanding the economic, social and political factors that drive migration, adding that African nations should work together to tackle the root causes of displacement and cross-border movement.
He said a coordinated continental approach would be more effective in managing migration challenges while promoting regional stability, economic development and cooperation among African states.
