President Cyril Ramaphosa says the Southern African Development Community (SADC) has reaffirmed its commitment to remain actively engaged with the political and security situation in Madagascar.
He says this engagement will continue until an elected government is established through credible, inclusive and democratic electoral processes.
Ramaphosa was speaking after chairing the Extraordinary Summit of SADC Heads of State and Government in his capacity as interim chairperson of the regional body.
He noted that the summit assessed ongoing political developments in Madagascar and reaffirmed SADC’s role in supporting dialogue, constitutional order and long-term stability in the country. The regional bloc has previously played a mediation role in Madagascar during periods of political uncertainty.
Ramaphosa emphasised that cooperation among SADC member states is key to maintaining regional stability, peace and socio-economic progress. He added that instability in any member state has broader implications for the region as a whole.
SADC says it will continue working closely with Malagasy authorities, regional partners and international stakeholders to support a peaceful resolution and strengthen democratic institutions in Madagascar.
