The South African National Civic Organisation in the Greater Mlete Region says President Cyril Ramaphosa’s call for communities, including churches, to play a greater role in confronting gender-based violence should be heeded.
These remarks were made by SANCO’s Provincial Treasurer and Umsunduzi municipality mayoral candidate, Ningi Mbanjwa, following allegations of sexual abuse against an Anglican Church pastor in Sobantu, Pietermaritzburg.
The pastor is alleged to have been grooming young girls at the church and sharing inappropriate content with them.
Mbanjwa says it is disappointing that such behavior allegedly took place in church that is regarded as a sanctuary for the community.
She says SANCO is appealing for justice to prevail, particularly for the victims and their families.
Mbanjwa reiterated,”President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for urgent action on all unresolved cases of violence and serious sexual offences against women and children.”
She added,”The minister Firoz Cachalia has also raised a serious concern around abuse within families and trusted relationships. As SANCO we say that commitment must translate into action and thorough investigation.”
