The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) has warned that irresponsible anti-illegal immigration mass action could threaten transport operations and undermine economic stability, with ordinary South Africans likely to bear the brunt of any disruption.
The warning comes amid calls by anti-illegal immigration groups for undocumented migrants to leave South Africa by the end of the month. Some of these groups have also announced plans for a national shutdown in support of their demands.
Santaco spokesperson Rebecca Phala said concerns around immigration and the enforcement of immigration laws should be addressed through legal and democratic processes.
She emphasised that any calls for immigration reform or stricter enforcement of existing legislation must be pursued through lawful, peaceful and constructive means, rather than through actions that could disrupt public transport services, businesses and the broader economy.
Phala cautioned that large-scale disruptions could have far-reaching consequences for commuters, workers and small businesses that depend on reliable transport networks and economic activity to earn a living. She urged all stakeholders to engage responsibly and avoid actions that could compromise public safety or social stability.
