The Parliament’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts inquiry has heard contradictory evidence over direct claims without the use of a lawyer from the Road Accident Fund.
Scopa is hearing evidence this week about procurement and financial management.
Last week RAF officials encouraged claimants whose cases are unresolved to come forward to be helped directly.
However, RAF’s communications head McIntosh Polela told the committee yesterday that it was made abundantly clear to him that the legislation does not allow for direct claims.
“There are only 3% of people that claim directly, 97% by way of lawyers. I do get members of the public that who ask, ‘I do want to claim, can I come directly or can I come by way of representation’? My advice is always, you need to find a lawyer to represent you and that’s purely based on legislation,” says Polela.
