National Commissioner of Correctional Services, Makgothi Thobakgale, says tougher action is needed to curb drug trading and smuggling in South African prisons.

This follows a surprise raid at Westville Correctional Centre, west of Durban, last night.

During the operation, officials uncovered a large stash of contraband—including drugs, cellphones, alcohol, homemade weapons, cash, and SIM cards—all of which are strictly prohibited behind bars.

Thobakgale says Westville Prison, which ranks among the top five most densely populated correctional facilities in the country, has become a prime target for criminal syndicates and smuggling networks.

He raised concerns about the flow of illicit drugs into the country’s prisons, particularly those located along the coastal areas.
