KwaZulu-Natal Transport MEC Siboniso Duma has issued a stern warning to motorists not to even consider drinking and driving this Easter weekend.
Duma visited several taxi ranks in Durban as the department ramped up preparations for the busy holiday period, with traffic volumes expected to increase from Thursday afternoon.
More than 3,400 Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) officers have been deployed as part of a province-wide road safety campaign. They are being supported by an additional 105 national traffic police officers, who will be on duty around the clock until 3 May.
Duma emphasised that drunken driving, speeding and reckless behaviour on the roads will not be tolerated, warning that law enforcement authorities will take decisive action against offenders.
He urged motorists to exercise caution, obey the rules of the road and prioritise the safety of all road users during the holiday period.
