Trade union Solidarity has accused low-cost carrier FlySafair of dragging its feet in resolving an ongoing labour dispute with its pilots, while allegedly downplaying the impact of the continued lockout on passengers and operations.
The union criticised the airline for what it calls a lack of urgency in engaging meaningfully with pilot representatives, despite growing travel disruptions and increasing frustration among travellers.
Solidarity sector head Helgard Cronjé said the airline has only agreed to begin negotiations on Wednesday. The union deems this delay unacceptable, given the mounting pressure on both staff and the flying public. “We had requested to meet much earlier, but FlySafair has shown little interest in resolving the matter swiftly,” Cronjé stated.
The dispute stems from demands related to working conditions and remuneration. The lockout is now affecting numerous flights. FlySafair, one of South Africa’s most punctual and popular domestic airlines, has reportedly been forced to adjust schedules and consolidate services due to the shortage of available pilots.
The airline has issued statements attempting to reassure customers and says it is managing the situation to minimise disruption. However, Solidarity contends that the company is underestimating the broader operational strain and reputational damage being caused.
Passengers have taken to social media to express frustration over delays, last-minute cancellations, and a lack of clear communication from the airline.
The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) has yet to comment on the dispute but is likely monitoring developments closely, especially given the potential impact on aviation safety and compliance.
The lockout follows similar disputes in the local aviation industry in recent years, as unions push for improved working conditions in a sector still recovering from the effects of COVID-19 and ongoing economic pressures.
Negotiations are expected to resume on Wednesday. Solidarity has urged FlySafair to come to the table with concrete proposals to end the impasse and avoid further disruption.
