Twelve people have died following a tragic head-on collision between a bus and a truck on the R34 near Vryheid, in the northern part of KwaZulu-Natal.

According to paramedic officials, the accident occurred shortly after midnight. Both the bus and truck drivers survived the crash and are currently receiving treatment in hospital. Their conditions have not yet been disclosed.

The bus is believed to have been transporting supporters of a political party who were returning from Youth Day celebrations held in Durban on Sunday. The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but early indications suggest that fatigue or poor visibility may have played a role.

KwaZulu-Natal Transport and Human Settlements spokesperson, Ndabezinhle Sibiya, said that provincial authorities are working closely with emergency services and law enforcement to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the crash.

“This is a heartbreaking tragedy, especially following a day meant to celebrate and honour the youth of our country. Our thoughts are with the families of the deceased, and we are providing support where possible,” Sibiya said.

The Department of Transport has once again urged long-distance drivers to rest adequately and ensure vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on extended trips, particularly during peak travel periods and national holidays.

This incident adds to the growing concern over road safety on South African highways, where collisions involving buses and heavy vehicles often result in high fatalities.
