The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has warned that the humanitarian situation in Gaza remains catastrophic, with children bearing the brunt of the crisis.
According to the agency, starvation is rampant, aid workers are overwhelmed, and essential supplies such as fuel and clean water are critically low.
Recent data indicates that more than 500,000 people, almost a quarter of Gaza’s population, are now enduring famine-like conditions. The remaining residents are experiencing what humanitarian agencies describe as “emergency levels” of hunger.
Since late May, over 1,000 Palestinians have reportedly been killed by Israeli military forces while attempting to access food aid, highlighting the extreme danger involved in seeking basic necessities.
UNICEF spokesperson Ricardo Pires described the situation as “a perfect storm of suffering for children,” adding that the current conditions in Gaza are among the worst the agency has seen globally in recent years.
“Children are starving. They are dehydrated. They are traumatised. And humanitarian access is being restricted to a point where we cannot reach those who need help the most,” Pires said.
