President Cyril Ramaphosa has condemned violence, looting and attacks on businesses amid the recent anti-illegal immigration protests in the prove.
He addressed the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s 170th Annual Gala Dinner in eThekwini last night.
In April 2024, he established the Presidential eThekwini Working Group in partnership with the Chamber, to address challenges including crime, water supply interruptions, ageing infrastructure, declining tourism and port inefficiencies.
Ramaphosa says economic prosperity depends on social stability, as businesses cannot flourish where there is violence, intimidation and lawlessness.

He further stressed that frustrations over the influx of illegal immigrations should be addressed in a lawful manner, without causing conflict between communities.
“Whatever grievances people may have, there can be no justification for violence, looting or destruction of livelihoods. We must be equally clear that concerns about illegal immigration can not be used as a pretext for criminality, violence or turning communities against each other,” said Ramaphosa.
