The Forum for South Africa (FOSA) has welcomed the arrest of 12 senior police officers accused of involvement in tender corruption.
The officers have been linked to the awarding of the R360 million Medicare 24 Tshwane District contract to alleged tender kingpin Vusimuzi Matlala, also known as “Cat”.
According to reports, the contract has been under scrutiny for some time amid allegations of irregular procurement processes, possible collusion, and the abuse of public funds. The arrests form part of a broader clampdown on corruption within law enforcement and public sector procurement.
The accused officers appeared in court on Wednesday, where they were granted bail ranging between R40,000 and R80,000. The case is expected to continue as investigations unfold.
FOSA leader Tebogo Mashilompane said the organisation has long raised concerns about the contract, describing it as emblematic of systemic weaknesses in procurement oversight.
Mashilompane added that accountability is critical to restoring public trust in state institutions, particularly within the South African Police Service, which has faced ongoing scrutiny over corruption and governance challenges.
