The ANC says it will appoint some mayoral candidates ahead of the upcoming local government elections, marking a shift from its traditional approach.
The new process is aimed at ensuring capable and ethical leadership, particularly in metros and key municipalities. It also forms part of broader efforts to improve governance and rebuild public trust in local government structures.
ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula says the party plans to finalise its selection process by June. Some candidates could take office before the elections, despite the risk of dissatisfaction within party ranks.
The move represents a significant change for the governing party, which has historically only confirmed mayoral candidates after elections. The ANC is also expected to widen its selection pool, including the possibility of external candidates, as it seeks to strengthen leadership ahead of a highly contested poll.
The 2026 local government elections come at a critical time for the ANC, which has faced growing criticism over service delivery failures and declining electoral support in recent years. Improving leadership at municipal level is seen as key to reversing these trends.
