The African Transformation Movement (ATM) has welcomed the establishment of Parliament’s impeachment committee into President Cyril Ramaphosa over the controversial Phala Phala scandal matter.
However, the party has warned against any political interference, saying the credibility of the process will depend on whether the committee acts independently and with integrity.
ATM has accused Parliament of previously shielding Ramaphosa from accountability following the theft of an estimated R10 million in foreign currency from his Phala Phala farm in Limpopo.
ATM spokesperson Zama Ntshona said the committee now has a responsibility to ensure transparency and accountability.
“The real test will be whether the committee is prepared to act without fear, favour or political influence,” Ntshona said.
The impeachment committee is expected to examine whether Ramaphosa has a case to answer in relation to the handling and disclosure of the stolen funds.
