Auditor-General Tsakani Maluleke says the state of financial and performance management in local government leaves much to be desired.
According to her office, local government has incurred R17.6 billion in fruitless and wasteful expenditure over the past three years.
Only 41 out of 257 municipalities received a clean audit for the 2023/2024 financial year.
Briefing Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Maluleke stated that just 16% of municipalities can be trusted to spend public funds effectively.
