The Democratic Alliance (DA) has formally written to National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza, requesting an urgent parliamentary sitting to address the imminent fuel price hike.
According to the latest estimates from the Central Energy Fund, petrol prices are expected to increase by around R6 per litre, while diesel could rise by approximately R10 per litre from tomorrow.
Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has, meanwhile, established a Cabinet committee to assess the broader economic impact of the ongoing Middle East conflict, including the recent surge in global oil prices.
The DA’s Mark Burke said the issue requires urgent national attention, warning that sharp fuel increases will have a ripple effect across the economy, driving up transport and food costs.
“This is a matter of national importance that demands immediate parliamentary oversight and intervention,” Burke said.
The party has called for swift action to explore measures that could mitigate the impact on consumers, as pressure mounts on government to respond to rising living costs.
