National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza has given political parties until the close of business today to submit their nominations for a 31-member parliamentary committee tasked with examining the allegations linked to the Phala Phala scandal.
The committee will be responsible for determining whether there is sufficient evidence for President Cyril Ramaphosa to formally answer to the claims arising from the controversy surrounding the burglary at his Phala Phala farm in Limpopo.
The process follows recommendations from an independent panel report, which found that the President may have a case to answer regarding the handling of the incident and the alleged theft of foreign currency from the farm in 2020.
Once established, the committee is expected to assess evidence, consider submissions and decide whether further parliamentary action is warranted.
The outcome of the committee’s deliberations could carry significant political implications for both Ramaphosa and Parliament, particularly amid ongoing scrutiny over accountability and executive oversight.
Speaking on the matter, Didiza said political parties are expected to ensure their nominations are submitted before the deadline so the committee can begin its work without delay.
