Suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi has been accused of acting in contempt of the Madlanga Commission after allegedly providing misleading information during his testimony.
Evidence leader Mahlape Sello raised concerns over apparent inconsistencies in Mkhwanazi’s birth records while questioning him before the commission. The discrepancies emerged during a line of inquiry related to a request for a postponement, which Mkhwanazi said was necessitated by the death of his mother.
However, under further scrutiny, Mkhwanazi clarified that he was raised by his stepmother, whom he regards as his mother. He told the commission that he does not know the identity of his biological mother, adding complexity to the issue surrounding the postponement request.
The commission is now expected to assess whether Mkhwanazi’s statements were intentionally misleading, a determination that could have serious implications for his credibility and the proceedings.
