The GOOD Party says South Africa’s genocide case against Israel before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) is based on evidence that will be objectively difficult to refute.
Secretary-General Brett Herron says Israel is entitled to file its reply to the accusation, now supported by about 18 other countries, that it is committing genocide against the Palestinian territories’ population, particularly in the Gaza Strip.
South Africa filed the case at the ICJ in December 2023, arguing that Israel’s military campaign in Gaza violates the Genocide Convention.
Israel has rejected the allegation and says its military operations are aimed at defeating Hamas following the group’s attack on Israel on 7 October 2023.
The ICJ, the principal judicial organ of the United Nations, previously issued provisional measures ordering Israel to take steps to prevent acts that could fall under the Genocide Convention and to allow increased humanitarian aid into Gaza while the court considers the merits of the case. A final ruling in the matter could take several years.
