The logo was unveiled at Gallagher Estate in Midrand, Gauteng, on Wednesday morning, marking a key milestone in the Electoral Commission’s preparations for the upcoming polls expected later this year.

Electoral Commission chairperson Mosotho Moepya says the logo for this year’s local government elections is designed to highlight the importance of voter participation at a time of declining turnout across the country.

According to Moepya, the visual identity of the election is intended not only to create awareness but also to serve as a reminder of the power of the vote in shaping local communities. Recent elections have seen a steady drop in voter turnout, raising concerns about civic engagement and the health of South Africa’s democracy.

The launch event signals an intensification of readiness efforts by the Electoral Commission, including logistical planning, voter education campaigns, and stakeholder engagement. As part of these preparations, a special voter registration weekend has been scheduled for June, giving eligible citizens an opportunity to register or update their details ahead of the elections.

Moepya called on political parties, civil society organisations, and the media to play an active role in mobilising voters. He stressed the importance of ensuring that citizens are not only encouraged to vote but are also well-informed about the issues affecting their communities.

“We all have a responsibility to strengthen our democracy by promoting meaningful participation,” Moepya said, adding that collaboration between institutions and the public will be critical to reversing the trend of low turnout.

The Electoral Commission is expected to roll out additional awareness campaigns in the coming months as the country moves closer to election day.
