The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) has welcomed former uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party secretary-general, Bongani Mncwango, as its newest member, in a move the party says reflects growing confidence in its leadership and political direction.
IFP president Velenkosini Hlabisa announced Mncwango’s arrival during a media briefing held on Wednesday at the party’s offices in Durban. He described the decision as significant, saying it was “not incidental”, but indicative of a broader shift in the political landscape.
According to Hlabisa, Mncwango’s move signals increasing trust in the IFP’s governance approach, particularly at a time when political realignments continue to shape the country’s multiparty environment.
“Mncwango’s decision to join the IFP is an affirmation that our message and leadership are resonating with leaders across the political spectrum,” Hlabisa said.
Mncwango parted ways with the MK Party last month under circumstances that have not been fully detailed publicly. His departure came amid ongoing internal developments within the party, which has seen a number of structural and leadership changes in recent months.
He has since been replaced as secretary-general by Sibonelo Nomvalo, who is also serving as a Member of Parliament.
While Mncwango has yet to outline his immediate role within the IFP, Hlabisa indicated that his experience in party administration and national politics would be an asset.
“We are confident that his organisational experience and understanding of the political environment will contribute positively to strengthening the IFP,” Hlabisa said.
Political analysts have noted that high-profile defections between parties, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal, often reflect shifting alliances and competition for influence in a province that remains a key electoral battleground.
The IFP has in recent years been working to consolidate its position in the province, while also attempting to grow its national footprint. The addition of figures such as Mncwango is expected to bolster the party’s efforts as it positions itself ahead of future electoral contests.
