KwaZulu-Natal Department of Home Affairs manager Cyril Mncwabe has defended the 457 migrants who were processed at the Durban Home Affairs office yesterday.
Mncwabe said all individuals who have been verified as being legally in South Africa have the right to remain in the country.
His comments come amid ongoing public debate around immigration and the processing of foreign nationals at Home Affairs offices across the province.
Speaking to the public broadcaster, Mncwabe said the department is following the law and that only properly documented individuals are being assisted.
He stressed that officials are required to verify the legal status of every person before services are rendered.
“This process is guided by the law, and those who are in the country legally have every right to access Home Affairs services,” he said.
The processing of hundreds of migrants at the Durban office drew public attention, with some community members raising concerns about immigration control and service delivery pressures.
However, Mncwabe reiterated that the department remains committed to ensuring that all applications and verifications are handled in accordance with South African immigration laws.
He also urged members of the public not to spread misinformation regarding migrants who have valid documentation and legal status in the country.
