KwaZulu-Natal Transport MEC Sboniso Duma says he is optimistic that the province will record a decline in road fatalities over the Easter holidays.
Duma conducted an inspection of public transport vehicles in Mdloti ahead of the official Easter Road Safety Campaign launch in KwaMashu, north of Durban.
The Easter period is expected to see increased traffic volumes, as holidaymakers travel to various tourist destinations and others attend church gatherings to celebrate the resurrection of Christ.
Duma said Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) officers will be deployed across the province to monitor compliance and enforce road safety regulations. He warned that law enforcement will take a zero-tolerance approach, and motorists found breaking the law will face arrest.
Authorities are urging road users to exercise caution, adhere to speed limits, and ensure that vehicles are roadworthy as part of efforts to reduce accidents and save lives during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
