Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, says uncontrolled migration can become a source of instability and must therefore be managed in a lawful, orderly and humane manner.
Addressing issues relating to migration on the African continent, Lamola noted that more than 45 million Africans are living outside their countries of birth. Of these, more than half, approximately 25 million people, have settled in another African country, highlighting the growing trend of intra-African migration.
Lamola said South Africa has emerged as one of the continent’s leading destinations for migrants, attracting people primarily from member states of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), as well as an increasing number from elsewhere in Africa, Europe and Asia.
He emphasised that migration can contribute positively to economic growth, skills development and regional integration when it is properly managed. However, he warned that weak migration controls and irregular migration can place pressure on public services, fuel social tensions and create security challenges if left unaddressed.
Lamola reiterated South Africa’s commitment to working with regional and international partners to strengthen migration governance, enhance border management and promote legal migration pathways, while ensuring that the dignity and human rights of migrants are protected.
His remarks come amid ongoing debate over migration policy and border security, as government faces growing pressure to address concerns around undocumented migration, public safety and social cohesion.
