Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi says the rapidly growing private transport sector urgently requires stricter regulation to ensure the safety of commuters.
Lesufi has called for inclusive engagement with all stakeholders in the sector, expressing concern over persistent safety challenges, particularly in private scholar transport.
He made these remarks while speaking to journalists in Vanderbijlpark, south of Gauteng, following a tragic collision involving a truck and a minibus taxi transporting schoolchildren. The accident claimed the lives of 12 learners and has sent shockwaves across the province.
According to police, the driver of the private scholar transport vehicle appeared to have lost control while attempting to overtake other vehicles. A case of culpable homicide has been opened, and investigations are under way.
“This tragic incident has laid bare the urgent work that needs to be done in regulating private transport, especially when it comes to the safety of our children,” Lesufi said. “We cannot continue to allow gaps in oversight that put lives at risk.”
The Premier added that the government would engage with transport operators, parents and regulatory bodies to strengthen compliance, enforcement and safety standards across the sector.
