Retired Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga has called on legal practitioners to play a leading role in restoring dignity, integrity and public confidence in South Africa’s legal profession.
Speaking at the Wits School of Law, the chairperson of the Madlanga Commission said lawyers must regard themselves not only as representatives of their clients, but also as officers of the court and champions of justice.
Madlanga emphasised that legal ethics demand honourable conduct, professionalism and an unwavering commitment to the rule of law. He said the credibility of the justice system depends largely on the integrity of those entrusted with administering and upholding it.
While acknowledging concerns about instances of unethical behaviour within the profession, Madlanga maintained that such cases do not reflect the legal fraternity as a whole.
He said the overwhelming majority of legal practitioners continue to conduct themselves ethically and remain committed to serving their clients, the courts and the broader interests of justice.
Madlanga urged current and future lawyers to uphold the highest ethical standards, warning that public trust in the legal system can only be maintained through accountability, honesty and professional excellence.
